Neighborhood

Uptown is divided in Four different sections also known as "Wards".

1st Ward (North East Corner)

Where classic meets contemporary…

Lovers of fine craftsmanship, classic architecture, contemporary creations and urban living will love Charlotte’s fantastic First Ward neighborhood.  Nestled amongst the craftsman houses and town homes the garden district beckons.  Banked by parks, E. trade street, Tryon Street, the entertainment district and I-277, First Ward truly does have it all.  Diversity reigns supreme, as this mixed income neighborhood continues to develop.

Additions such as Imaginon, and the restoration of the Carolina Theater anchor the arts firmly in the First Ward.  The continued construction of the new UNCC uptown campus, First Ward Elementary and Trinity Episcopal School bring a rich, learning Mecca to this wonderful neighborhood.  Past and present meld seamlessly in the First Ward, with endless future possibilities rising high.

2nd Ward (South East Corner)

The “Brooklyn” of Charlotte…

Known for decades as Brooklyn, home to a lively, active, and bustling urban community, the Second Ward has gone through a remarkable revitalization in the years since it first earned its moniker.  Located in the southeast quadrant of uptown, Second Ward is bordered by E. Trade Street, the Tryon Street business and entertainment district and the I-277 urban highway loop.  This active neighborhood consists of elite condominium mid-rises, the Trust and the Ratcliffe, is anchored by The Green, a gorgeous park which sparkles with life, and has future planned towers at the EpiCenter and The Park.  The proposed 2nd Ward/Brooklyn Village will create a broad, diverse, inclusive neighborhood with different types of housing, shops, a brand new high school and plenty of restaurants and cute eateries.  Currently the new LYNX light rail has three stops in Second Ward, at Trade Street, 3rd Street/Convention Center, and the Westin Hotel.  In addition the rich history of NASCAR will be celebrated at the new NASCAR Hall of Fame,

slated for completion in 2009.   The NASCAR Hall of Fame project will only booster and enrich the Second Ward and its many stellar attributes.  Like Brooklyn, the revitalized gem of NYC, the Second Ward is due to be a true gem and cornerstone neighborhood for the Queen City.

3rd Ward (South West Corner)

A community in constant motion…

Home to young families, retirees, empty nesters, long time residents and hard working professionals, the Third Ward is a sanctuary among the Sycamores.  One of the most diverse neighborhoods in Center City, this eclectic ward is bordered by lively W. Trade Street, I-77 and the Tryon Street business district.  Residents enjoy restored mill houses, charming town homes and gleaming new high rises.  Third Ward boasts Center City’s only dog park, and the soon to be constructed Romare Bearden Park.  Nothing remains still in the Third Ward, as it is a community in constant motion.  Johnson & Wales has made its home in the Third Ward, and its students can be found bustling down the streets amid the passing technology professionals.  This active and animated setting continues to grow and expand, as the Mint Museum, Knight Theater, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, and the Harvey Gantt African American Culture Center are due to change the landscape of this wonderfully diverse neighborhood forever.  With continued mixed-use development, including incredibly innovative housing options, the Third Ward proves to be the perfect contemporary suburb.

4th Ward (North West Corner)

Quaint Victorian living meets urban style…

A premier uptown community, historic Fourth Ward, beautifully melds restored 100-plus-year-old Victorian homes, with luxury condominiums, urban apartments, parks and businesses.  Historic Fourth Ward is bordered by the Tryon Street business and entertainment district, the historical Elmwood Cemetery, and bustling Trade street.  It is artfully bolstered by the gorgeous Fourth Ward Park, where you can wander through narrow tree-lined streets, and be visually stimulated by the grand Victorian homes with gingerbread millwork, charming wrap around porches and beautiful old-fashioned gardens.  Historic Fourth Ward is dedicated to preserving its history.  December brings a wildly popular tradition, the Fourth Ward Holiday Home Tour.  The Fourth Ward Holiday Home Tour is a fantastic and unique tour of the neighborhood and its Victorian homes decked out in their entire holiday splendor.  With the recent development of condominium towers, The Vue, the Avenue, as well as mid-rise condominium projects such as the Garrison at Graham and the Citadin, this rich and lush neighborhood is growing and rising to great heights.  Beautiful, stylish, quaint, and continuous growth potential, helps to make historic Fourth Ward one of the most sought after, and desirable communities in Charlotte today.

Southend

Industry meets innovation…

A true mixed-use urban neighborhood, Historic South End blends industry and innovation.  In the 1850’s when the first railroad line came to Charlotte, connecting the Queen City to Columbia and Charleston, SC, a thriving manufacturing community sprang up along the tracks, from this manufacturing community industry and progress pushed forward.  With a great balance of businesses, housing and retail, South End will deliver over 1,400 apartment units to the market in the next 2 years, a remarkable achievement spurred on by the completion of the LYNX Blue Line.  The LYNX runs directly through the heart of South End and there are 3 walk-up transit stops, making access easy and direct.  The LYNX is a sleek, progressive, modern transit option that will continue to add to the redevelopment and renaissance of Historic South End.

Businesses continue to flock to the Historic South End, attracted to

this diverse neighborhood and it’s remarkable potential.   The

community is rich, creative and continuing to grow.  There are no limitations for this industrious ward.
