Surrounding Neighborhood
Southend
www.historicsouthend.com
Historic South End has its beginning in the 1850s when the first
railroad line came to Charlotte, connecting the Queen City to
Columbia and Charleston, SC. Over the years a thriving manufacturing
community sprang up along the tracks, centered on the burgeoning
textile industry. The area declined during the 1970s and 80s, only
to be revived in the 1990s as restaurants, shops, and design-related
industries discovered the beauty and versatility of the old mills
and warehouses.
Dilworth
www.idilworth.org
Architecture in Dilworth, as in most neighborhoods old enough to
span a number of styles, is an exhibit of fads. However, Dilworth
was fortunate enough to run out of land before it ran out of fads -
and lucky enough to preserve those fads that showcase the most
interesting styles of the first half of the twentieth century.
Except for the odd example of
conspicuous Southern Belle-ism, Dilworth south of East Blvd. was
built in modern idiom. Although most of the houses look as if they
were built some time during World War I or the Roaring Twenties,
they are honest about what they are. They do not pretend they were
built 200 years ago. North of East Blvd., where the homes are more
expensive, there are more examples of late Victorian, neo-classical
and Tudor revival.
